JOURNAL TOPIC: [today's tunes: "Wankatakiya" and "It Is a Good Day" by Spirit Nation]

Since the words of these songs are unfamiliar, just listen to them as part of the music for now.  It's a good time to think about tone and moodTone is the author's attitude toward the characters, the subject, and/or the audience.  Mood is the emotional state of the reader.  How would you describe the tone and mood of these songs?  How would you describe the tone and mood of White Buffalo Calf Woman?

AGENDA:

  1. Well if I was a writer and saw someone reading my book I'd be interested in their opinion. The reader of William Wilson's book is definitley not into it. I would feel the same way he felt. I would want to tell them off and say that they don't know what good books are. Unfortunately, you can't and I am glad he didn't because not everyone is going to like what you have to say. Whether if its a book you write or a post. No one agrees with everyone we all have our own opinions.

  2. I think that I would do the same as William Wilson. He had to know that not everyone would enjoy his book as much as others. Yet, I would definitely get mad at the reader for her comments, but like him, id swallow my pride and walk away.

  4. From my point of view if i where an author and had come across a person reading my book i would ask there opinion not saying who i was. If they had responded badly i would have taken what they said into consideration and made my next book better but to be honest i also probably wouldn't have handled it as well as he did, i probably would have thought of saying something along the lines of that person not knowing what there talking about and that they where wrong, and ya all in all me doing that would be pretty immature but hey who wouldnt get a little defensive and insulted over that. All though i probably would never say it out loud. Upon reading this it made me rethink how i would react and got me to ponder a bit.

  5. I beleive it is a good thing if you are a writer to receive good feedback in your work. Perhaps if you see someone reading a book it would be a good conversation idea to ask them what they think about it, but there is actually critic forums where readers tell their opinions about the book. Also, it is important to remember that everyone likes different types of artwork. While someone may like fantasies or action some others like a more intellectual art book. You cannot judge someone because that person doesn't like your book but it is only a matter of preference.

  6. It's sad to think that a writer can pour their heart and soul into their work and to be vulnerable enough to put it out into the world, open to criticism and feedback only to find out that not everyone appreciates it or gives it the time of day.

  7. If I was the author I would ask the reader what they thought of the book. If the response was good or bad I would swallow my pride either way. Even though I worked very hard on the book I know that people have their own opinions. Everyone is different, not everyone is gonna agree with you.

  8. Though this was probably the "right" thing to do, to "keep calm and carry on" sort of thing. I'm very curious to know how she would have reacted if she knew it was the Author she was talking to and asking her questions about his book. We can probably guess the outcome, she would have complimented him on his well written novel that she couldn't stop reading r something of the sort. I guess what the author is trying to convey is that his pride was hurt so he wasn't about to tell the woman that he was the author and further embarass himself and give away his secret identity at the same time.

  9. To me it seemed liked he wanted to know more about the young woman's opinion about his book but he struggled to ask more questions because I think he was mad about how he doesn't know exactly how she feels about the book so he thinks his work isn't good enough to please the young woman. I also feel like trying to know better on her opinion about his book can help him later on in other work he later does as an author.

  10. I thought this post was interesting, although I'm not quite sure what I would do in this situation. I defiantly enjoyed reading it though.

  11. This is a really interesting read. I feel like it applies to my life recently. Having expectations or high hopes is a very good thing but at the same time can have detrimental results. People often do not do what you expect, need or want. Not unlike this poor author, humans in general have a nasty habit of assuming things, and in return being disappointed with the outcome.

  12. Honestly I believe the author shouldn't have overreacted so offensively because you can't please everyone, some people are going to like it and others won't. No matter how hard you try to make everyone happy it's not going to happen there's just to many opinions to please everyone and he should get use to it.

  13. Interesting. I understand where the author is coming from, being upset about someone not being terribly interested in something you put a lot of time and effort into making, but you can't please everyone and you shouldn't expect to.

  14. My prospective about this was a big one that created and visualized the whole thing and what of happened. It's crazy to think that the boy had a common personality to William Wilson and it's also sad to think about because the girl didn't even like the book so why would she keep reading? Because the boy felt the same to the book and understood it, but didn't want to come out and say it because he was scared. Also it's just sad to think that someone that hurts inside doesn't get attention when he is begging inside for it, but yet he doesn't really seem like he cares because he got up and walked away without saying anything, but ending the conversation with the girl.
